Knights v Caversham

After our night out in Windsor, we checked out of Skyways just in time for the 11 o'clock deadline and made our way to Joe Richardson's home outside Basingstoke for lunch. Maggie Richardson prepared a lovely beef stew for us and we used the time before our 4pm fixture to sort out arrangements during our 5-day Christmas break, Skype home and relax.

We were playing Joe's home club that Sunday afternoon, Caversham Health and Fitness, and were keen to put in a good performance and get another team victory. Joe showed us the way to the club and John Shean came to watch too. After about a half hour drive, we arrived at the club and Charl and Dan went on first against Stuart Milton and Matt Baynes. Dan was able to shake off the previous night's effects and win in 3 while Charl struggled to 1-1 before going down 3-1. Mike and Stef went on against Eric Garson and Adam Giles and Mike soon closed out his match in 3 to put the knights 2-1 up in games. Stef got off to a more shaky start and dropped the first game, but as we knew by now, Stef warms himself up in the first and the match only truly begins in the 2nd! He got into the zone and finished strong to win 3-1 and log a win for the knights before the number 1's went on court. The crowd gathered to watch our Kyle play against British and European u17 champion, Kyle Finch. We were glad to have the fixture in the bag once we saw this youngster start to play. He has all the ability in the world, with both technique and movement, but more importantly, has a great squash brain and composure under pressure. Kyle Maree took the 1st in a tightly contested game but then went down 3-1 as Finch got into his stride and mistakes dried up. We wish Kyle all the best and hope to see him go far in the game!

We had a customary chilli supper followed by a box of chocolates which we thoroughly enjoyed. Mike and Stuart gave good post-match speeches and reinforced the bond we have with Caversham. Charl, Kyle and Stef spent the night at the Richardson's while Dan and Mike were hosted by the Shean's in Wokingham. Thanks to Joe, Stuart and the guys at Caversham for a great evening!
